Essential Items You Must Have As a Pomeranian Owner
These fluffy, spirited little dogs bring warmth and companionship but they also come with specific needs and requirements that every responsible owner should be prepared for. Whether you're a first-time dog owner, adding to your furry family or already have a Pomeranian, here are some essential items you should have.
1. Harness (Not a Collar)
Pomeranians are known for their delicate tracheas, which can be easily damaged by pulling on a collar. Therefore, a harness is essential for walking and training your Pomeranian. Opt for a harness that fits comfortably and securely, distributing any pressure evenly across their chest rather than their neck. Avoid harnesses that cross the trachea. Mocha’s favourite is the Gooby Step in X harness which is designed to keep pressure off the trachea area due to the design. Since we purchased this harness for Mocha, they had a design update and is also now escape free - which is a great bonus!
2. Grooming supplies
These adorable little balls of fur require special attention and care to maintain their distinctive appearance and overall coat health. Ideally, you should brush your Pomeranian at least once a day using a slicker brush and a metal comb to prevent their coat from matting. It is also essential to use a shampoo that is carefully formulated to meet the needs of such beautifully coated breeds. A grooming spray is also essential as a Pomeranian’s dry coat should never be brushed to prevent damaging the coat. Mocha uses the Sirius Alpha range that we professionally got formulated ourselves. You can read more about the Sirius Alpha range here
3. Ramp
In Pomeranians, a common issue is patellar luxation, where the kneecap (patella) can dislocate from its normal position. This condition can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty walking. Pomeranians are prone to this due to their small size and genetics. To minimize its impact, it's crucial to avoid activities that involve jumping or excessive strain on the knees. Using a ramp like this one can help Pomeranians access higher places without putting stress on their joints. Ramps provide a gentler incline, reducing the risk of injury and strain on the patellas. Here’s a ramp nearly identical to the one that Mocha uses. Great thing about the design of the pictured and linked ramps are that they are non slip and fold flat for easy storage!

4. Comfortable Bed
Pomeranians may be small, but they still need a comfortable and supportive bed to rest in. As a breed with unfortunately the common problem of luxating patellas, an orthopaedic bed is ideal as it provides adequate cushioning and support for their joints, which is especially beneficial as they age. Look for a bed that is washable and made from durable materials to withstand their playful nature. Our favourite is the Kangaroo bed (pictured) which meets all these requirements. Did we mention that they have additional covers available for winter and summer so you can swap and change covers depending on the time of the year for your Pomeranian’s comfort and the aesthetic of your home?! They additionally have a cooling mat for summer that currently comes with any purchase of their beds. The code MOCHA10 gives you an additional discount.

5. Raised Food and Drink Bowl
To promote proper digestion and reduce strain on your Pomeranian's neck and back, invest in a raised food and water bowl set. This ergonomic design ensures they can comfortably eat and drink without having to bend down too far, which is especially important for smaller breeds prone to joint issues. The bowl pictured below is our favourite - both aesthetic and raised just enough for a Pomeranian.

5. Car Seat Booster
Safety is paramount when traveling with your Pomeranian. A car seat booster designed for small dogs provides a secure and elevated position, allowing them to see out of the window while keeping them restrained and safe during car rides. This helps prevent distractions for the driver and ensures your Pomeranian stays secure. The booster seat pictured is our favourite that we have tried - it adds the perfect height for a Pomeranian to be able to see out the window to enjoy the scenery of the drive. We have had the one pictured below for some years now and it has proven itself to be durable and long lasting! What is great about it is that it allows for a great boost perfect for the size of a Pomeranian to be able to look out the window. It has a comfortable pillow for the dogs to sit on and slightly raised edges when they have had enough of looking out the window and want to rest their heads (as Mocha likes to do often!)

Additional Tips:
- Toys: Pomeranians are energetic and intelligent dogs that require mental stimulation. Invest in toys that are appropriately sized for their small mouths and provide enrichment through interactive play. Here are some of Mocha’s favourite toys
- Training Essentials: Treats for positive reinforcement training, a comfortable bed for nap times, and puppy pads are also crucial for successfully integrating your Pomeranian into your home.
Owning a Pomeranian is a rewarding experience that comes with its unique set of responsibilities. By preparing your home with these essential items and ensuring you have the knowledge and resources to care for your new furry friend, you'll be well-equipped to provide a loving and nurturing environment for your Pomeranian puppy to thrive.
Remember, each Pomeranian has its own personality and preferences, so be patient and attentive as you get to know your new companion. With proper care and attention, your Pomeranian will become a cherished member of your family for years to come.
